The Huntington Beach Sports Hall of Fame (HBSHoF) Bylaws
Mission and Purpose
The Huntington Beach Sports Hall of Fame (HBSHoF) aims to recognize and honor individuals who have achieved excellence in organized athletics and have a strong connection to the Huntington Beach, CA community. This includes athletes, coaches, administrators, and media representatives who have made significant contributions to their sport and the community. Additionally, the HBSHoF is committed to creating a scholarship component to recognize outstanding community members.
Governance
The following rules will govern the operations of the HBSHoF, also referred to herein as "the Board" or "Committee".
I. Criteria for Selection
A. Athlete, Coach, or Relevant Individual (Regardless of sport, age, current residence, or biological gender)
- Must have roots in Huntington Beach and significantly impacted their sport.
- Criteria for nomination include:
- Recognized contributions to their sport.
- Participation in a nationally recognized league, holding sport records, or similar achievements.
- Demonstrated good citizenship, moral character, and integrity.
- Documentation of high school, club, collegiate, and professional achievements.
B. Teams
- Teams eligible for induction must have recommendations from relevant sports authorities and a detailed description of their achievements.
C. Coaches
- Eligible coaches must have a record of significant achievements, contributions to the Huntington Beach sports community, and exemplary character.
D. Special Inductees
- Individuals who have uniquely contributed to the local athletics program may be eligible for special induction.
II. Nomination Procedures
- Nominations are reviewed annually. Unsuccessful nominations may be resubmitted in subsequent years.
- Nominations must be submitted via the HBSHoF form or a detailed letter.
- The nominations will be mailed to the Executive Director:

III. Inductions
- No more than six individuals or teams will be inducted annually.
- When a team is selected for induction, the team will not be inducted until the following year which will provide ample time for all members to be contacted. The Committee shall identify either a team coach, captain, or trainer to be responsible for contacting all team members.
- Efforts will be made to balance the gender and sport of inductees.
- Formal inductions occur in the spring at a designated sports event.
- Unless the inductee is being posthumously recognized, the health of the inductee precludes attendance, or the Committee has approved the absence of the inductee, inductees must be present for the induction ceremonies and associated activities. Those inductees who are unable to be present, for the reasons noted above, may have a designated representative to attend the activities.
IV. Responsibilities of Inductees
Inductees are expected to maintain good character, support the HBSHoF, and keep updated contact information.
V. Hall of Fame Committee
A. Membership
- The Committee consists of members appointed by the Executive Director and Board, with the ability to remove members if necessary.
- In case of vacancy, the committee shall present a list of suitable candidates for membership to the Executive Director and Board.
B. Officers
- Officers include a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer, with terms and selection processes defined.
- The Chair shall serve an initial two-year term.
VI. Meetings/Order of Business
- The Committee meets quarterly, with specific rules for conducting business and voting.
- All mailing or correspondence to the Committee shall be delivered by mail or e-mail at least five (5) business days prior to the scheduled meeting.
- The Committee members present at any meeting, whether in person or by electronic means, shall constitute a quorum. The majority of those present shall constitute what is necessary for action (s) to be approved.
- Any meeting conducted without a majority number of members present shall have any items voted upon forwarded to all Committee members within fourteen (14) business days after the meeting has occurred.
VII. Sub-Committees / Advisory Committee
- Sub-committees are appointed for various functions, including Membership, Program/Publicity, Nominating, Research/Memorabilia, and Finance.
VIII. Membership
Membership categories range from Sustaining Life-time Member ($5,000) to Student Membership ($10.00), each offering different benefits.
- Sustaining Life-time Member -$5,000
- Allows for Lifetime with no further dues.
- Four Tickets to each Induction Ceremony
- Logo on website, sized accordingly and on back of Inductee's Permanent Award
- Gold Medal Membership -$2,500
- Allows for 5 years with no further dues.
- Three Tickets to each Induction Ceremony
- Logo on website, sized accordingly
- Silver Membership - $1,500
- Allows for 5 years with no further dues.
- Two Tickets to each Induction Ceremony
- Logo on website, sized accordingly.
- o Bronze Membership -$500
- Allows for 2 years with no further dues.
- Two Tickets to each Induction Ceremony
- Logo on website, sized accordingly.
- Annual Membership -Friends of HBSHoF
- $25.00
- Students under 18 years of age
- $10.00
IX. Scholarships
- The HBSHoF plans to introduce a Monetary Scholarship Program in its second year of incorporation.
These bylaws set forth the governance structure and operational guidelines for the Huntington Beach Sports Hall of Fame, ensuring its mission and purpose are carried out effectively.
